Bill Barton

Bill has specialised in contentious and non-contentious construction for nearly 20 years, having been a partner with Walker Morris, Watson Burton and DLA Piper.

He has particular expertise in drafting and negotiating specialist bespoke contracts whether in relation to wind farms, renewable energy such as biomass or formal standard construction projects. As a result, he is experienced in drafting amendments to and negotiating not only standard forms of contract such as JCT, NEC and ICE, but also the FIDIC Red and Silver books and well as IChemE Burgundy, Red and Yellow books.

Bill dealt with the construction aspects of the East London Waste Management scheme, a £750 million PFI scheme in 2006 and has advised on a number of on-shore wind farms. He has also drafted and negotiated contracts for an oil tank farm in Ghana and construction contracts in Greece. Other specialist projects have included a £50 million pharmaceutical plant, a bottling production and supply contract, a works call-off contract for a housing association; due diligence on a £450 million biomass project, and advising on specialist sub contracts on a rail franchise project.

Bill is a qualified mediator and a fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators. He has substantial experience in conducting adjudications, mediations and arbitrations as well as litigation within the TCC.

He regularly advises international clients from Geneva, Milan, Durban and Tunis on their international construction projects.

Bill also provides specialist construction advice and assistance to other law firms that do not have construction expertise.

Bill is an occasional lecturer at Leeds University Department of Engineering and has prepared and delivered seminars both in house and at conferences both nationally and internationally.

Outside of work, Bill has numerous personal interests including running, golf and travel.
